Background
History
Citizens of Vietnam were trying to escape from French imperialism after World War II. The Chinese and other communist nations aided the North Vietnamese in hopes the country would become independent and communist. The United States aided to French in order that they could prevent the spread of communism. In 1975, the French left with an agreement that Vietnam would become democratic. However, the war between the North and South went on. The North won and that left Vietnam a communist state. In 1978, they ran the genocidal leaders - The Khmer Rouge- out of power. The country is slowly becoming more and more capitalistic.
Culture
LanguageThe official language of Vietnam is Vietnamese, but English has become increasingly popular. Khmer is the language native to Vietnam. French is also spoken often in this country.

CuisineVietnamese love to eat different types of meat and seafood. Top choices are goats, roosters, and type of fish. Unique herbs in Asia are used in almost every dish. Coconut, almond, and bananas usually make up their desserts.

ReligionDue to the government being communist, most people do not practice religion. However, those who do are usually Buddhists or Hindu.

Food: Travelers are encouraged to visit small markets along the streets. You can find lunch meals for under $1! You can also go to nice restaurants and spend up to $10. Your money will get you far with food. Do not expect to spend more than $35 a day in food.
Hotel: Four-star hotels are only $60 a night. Also, a Vietnamese two-star hotel is like an American three-star hotel. A two-star hotel is no more than $20 a night.
Transportation: Rental motorbikes are $4-$7 a day and get you throughout the country perfectly. Rental cars are using $50 a day, but they are not as necessary unless you plan on taking far day trips.
